We love history here at Fieldstaffs, and lots of our regular customers are involved in local living history groups; Rochester has regular festivals where people take to the streets in historical costume. Very often visitors to the shop will be surprised to see Victorians rubbing shoulders with veterans from WW1 & WW2. Surrounded by authentic artefacts on a regular basis, we're always keen to use them to help educate young people about British history.
Over the years we've helped the children of our local school St Andrews, with their history lessons. Their year 2 were studying the Victorians recently, so with help from some of our lovely customers and the local museum, 46 children were able to spend the afternoon with Queen Victoria and her royal entourage!
The children thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon, they asked loads of very pertinent questions and their enthusiasm and touching thank you notes made it all worth while.
A huge thank you to our friends Eve Luck (Queen Victoria) Barrie Luck (John Brown) Dawn & John Howard (The Tsar & Tsarina of Russia) and Nick Baines (Colour Sergeant Bourne) who made it such an enjoyable afternoon, not just for the children, but for us here at Fieldstaffs. Also to the Guildhall Museum for a truly fantastic venue (they do weddings there as well!!)
We just can't wait till next time!
